Why You May Want to Come In for a Fluoride Treatment

There has been a lot of research done on the benefits of fluoride when it comes to your oral health. It has shown that fluoride is very effective at preventing tooth decay, especially on those who take good care of their teeth on a daily basis. Fluoride is something you may be getting already, but if you are not getting enough, then a fluoride treatment may be the best option for you.

Where You May Be Getting Fluoride Already

Fluoride is probably something you are already getting. Between the toothpaste and mouthwash you use, the foods you eat, and any tap water you drink, your body is getting some fluoride from somewhere. The problem is, your body is also using up that fluoride on a regular basis. Each time acid or plaque is left up against your teeth, it is pulling minerals from your teeth, eroding the enamel. The more fluoride you can replace, the stronger and healthier you are able to keep your teeth.

What You Should Know About Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride treatments typically come in three forms. First, we can put a gel in your mouth to let your teeth soak up a lot of fluoride during the treatment. This takes a few minutes, and then you will be instructed to not eat, drink, or brush for anywhere from 30-60 minutes following treatment. Next, we can offer a foam, which basically does the exact same thing.

Finally, we can paint a fluoride varnish on your teeth. This is typically the preferred method as it sticks to your teeth, and allows you to eat and drink like normal within minutes of the varnish being put on. Fluoride treatments can be repeated as necessary, but will typically last anywhere from 3-12 months, depending on the condition of your mouth before the procedure. Getting a fluoride treatment is painless, but gives you a big health benefit when it is done.
